This also means, by the way, that the German 7-7-10 pzr regiment would be attacking at 1 to 2 (7 to 8) rather than at 1 to 1.Question #3: In any case in which a unit with a smaller attack factor exchanges against an enemy hex containing more factors than the attacker, the defending stack must remove factors that at least match those lost by the attacker. My second question is, what happens if, using different units, an “exchange” is rolled, but the number of defense factors is the same for both the German and Allied units, either due to modifications of terrain or due to the normal adding up of defense factors without terrain modifications? War in the East So, just for spares really. Vera Cruz. The game covers the entire war from the Axis invasion of Russia to the final Tamburlaine The Great. On its face, however, this 'attack on the march' idea, along with the recommended changes to the 'forced march' rules, seems mainly at directed at defeating Oktay Oztunali's first year Soviet 'Quick Step' Defense, and little else. Thanks for your kind reply. My third question is, what if --for example-- the Allied player attacks a German 7-7-10 unit with a 4-4-7 unit (while that 4-4-7 unit is on an escarpment hex) and the dice roll brings about an “exchange.” As I understand it, the Allied player actually has the greater defense factor because he is on the escarpment hex, which doubles his defense factor (Even though the Allied player is attacking, nevertheless terrain still counts in determining his defense factor, according to rule, “In an exchange the defense factors are computed at basic or double value according to terrain.”). Jay I have a new set of rules and I have played all 208 turns of WitE 1st twice using them and both times got a very close game that saw the Germans almost win one of them in sudden death taking Stalingrad on the last turn of summer only to have the Russians take it back in their half of the turn.So I've played two games out to the end with the rules and I say they do fix the issues. You say you have read them and don't think they work.Try them I'll even supply a vassal module for us to play against each other, I'll take either side!Chuck S. Greetings Chuck:Your offer of a PBeM match is both generous and intriguing. What edition would you recommend to a newbie and why? The German player’s dice roll results in an “exchange.” Therefore, the Allied unit is eliminated by virtue of having fewer defense factors than the total defense factor of the stacked German units, but (if I understand the rules) the German 7-7-10 unit would also have to be eliminated in the exchange because in this situation the German player must eliminate a number of his own attack factors at least equal to the number of attack factors of the eliminated Allied unit. Unfortunately, I am not currently in a position to take on such a project, I am pretty sure that I will be able to take you up on your challenge in a few months time. Thanks again for visiting andBest Regards, Joe. I live in the UK and was an avid collector and player of SPI games in the late 70s and early 80s. Instead, I offer this observation simply as another, somewhat diferent take on what most WIE players have long recognized as an irksome problem with the game.In the end, of course, the ultimate blame for the game's many flaws lies with Jimmie Dunnigan who opted to reproduce a vision of the War in the East more in keeping with the ideas of Field Marshal Model, than with those of Erich von Manstein. I'm sorry that I have been recorded as Anon, but I didn't see where to leave my name. Since the Allied unit has a defense factor of 8 (accounting for terrain), the German player must remove his 7-7-10 unit in the exchange due to his lower defense factor. However, had the 7-7-10 been stacked with Division Ariete (4-5-6), then the Italian armored division could be eliminated (4 attack factors for 4 defense factors) to satisfy the exchange requirement.Question #2: I suspect that, in this example, you may be a little unclear about the actual requirements of an exchange result. Thus, a 4-4-7 occupying an escarpment hex would have a defense strength of '8' while a 7-7-10 attacking from an adjacent escarpment hex would have an attack factor of '7' (its potential defense factor of '14' would be irrelevant in this case).
